iEARN has unpacked a Hands On and Minds On Professional learning that meets the goals of a successful learning program and curriculum.

Using technology in lectures - Higher Education

Lectures continue to be the primary teaching approach in higher institutions of learning, however maintaining the attention of large diverse groups of students during lectures can be challenging.

To support student engagement, lecturers are encouraged to use a variety of media in their lectures and to create opportunities for interaction.

Technology plays an important role in assisting the achievement of these aims and an integrated suite of audio-visual tools is the norm in most modern lecture theatres.

In addition to a computer connected to a projector and the Internet, Learning Management Systems are becoming more popular in many higher learning institutions.

This therefore calls for a proffessional learning program that will help lecturers and academics leaders to:
  • Create engaging online platform for a digital classroom from the ground up, starting with a paper course outlines.
  • Set the foundations of choosing an appropriate Learning Management System for the institutions’ learning needs.
  • Understand the roles of the LMS in the learning environment, and how both instructors and students interact with the system.
  • Learn from best practices for utilizing an LMS for learning,
  • Become exposed to most of the industry-leading Learning Management Systems available e.g. Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, Desire2Learn, Edmodo, Schoology etc.

This an opportunity for the lectures, instructors and educators to learn how to practically customize LMS appearance and their preferences, structure a course, add content and students, create online quizzes, manage your gradebooks etc.

Digital Leadership - Education Managers and School Leaders

A coherent and integrated set of conditions to support the adoption of innovative teaching and use of technology is lacking in most of the schools and learning institution.

Administrations play a pivotal role in determining how well we use technology in our learning institutions.

This leadership workshop will help institution administrators define and develop policies around the use of ICT for their schools.

School leaders and managers will learn how to help their teachers, students, and parents become smart and effective participants in a digital world while creating a safe and secure environment for learning and teaching.

The goal is therefore to provide leaders with strategies, tools, and support that will enable them identify critical barriers and determine how to implement leadership strategies to support change on the scale necessary to achieve systemic transformation lead the effective use of technology in schools.

The outcome is a school culture that offers a common vision of innovation as well as consistent support that encourages new methods of teaching.

Teaching with Technology - Teachers at all levels

For technology integration to be successful, teachers need to make informed choices relating to pedagogical approach, student’s needs, and learning objectives.

Technology (applied appropriately and innovatively) can and does help learners develop all kinds of skills - from the basic problem solving, collaboration, innovation to the higher-order critical thinking ones.

iEARN Kenya offers professional development sessions that involves the active and direct engagement of teachers, particularly in practicing and researching new teaching methods.

These sessions help educators develop an understanding of how to make the best use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning in order to meet curriculum goals. The emphasis is on practical learning activity designs and solutions that support a learner’s learning.

iEARN Kenya believes in:

  • Learner-centered pedagogies that promote personalized learning;
  • Extending learning beyond the classroom in ways most relevant to knowledge-building and problem-solving that serves the community; and
  • ICT integration into pedagogy in ways that support learning goals. ICT use is not a goal in itself, but a tool to broaden and deepen learning opportunities.

In this workshop, iEARN Kenya aims to work directly with Educators and stakeholders who possess advanced technology skills and are interested in building their integration skill set. We have designed this professional learning experience to help participants become coaches for their peers and in their learning institutions.
